Blades of Time Review

It wouldn't be hard to write Blades of Time off as a botch of a video game. Its fantasy plot is entirely forgettable, its rousing and heroic score is mixed so weirdly that it often sounds like it's filtering in from an upstairs bedroom, and its voice acting is the kind of thing people lose Equity cards over. Its character models are dead-eyed and endlessly recycled, some of its central mechanics are implemented with staggering awkwardness, and several of the game's environments feature particle effects of such bizarre over-ambition that they reduce the frame-rate to single figures just when things are starting to get exciting.

There's a lot that's wrong with Blades of Time, then, but if you fight through the drab early levels, there are also a few things that are kind of right about it too. This isn't a game that you'd necessarily want to go out and buy. OK, it's probably not even a game that you'd actually choose to rent. But if you were, oh, I don't know, left it in the will of an eccentric uncle, say, it would probably be worth taking for a spin before you traded it in.

With that ringing endorsement still echoing in your ears, let's get down to basics. Blades of Time is the 'spiritual successor to X-Blades' - a turn of phrase that means the developers have ditched the cel-shaded art, changed a lot of the story elements, but left you controlling a mirror-world version of Ayumi, the pants-and-bra hack-and-slash heroine whose character design barrels straight past the point where she might be sort of sexy and heads deep into that strange emotional territory where all you want to do is get her a cardigan. She must be freezing.

Angry Birds Space soars higher than the hype

Wow, I am dazzled. That?s unusual even with amazing new games, much less sequels of sequels. I have never been a big physics gamer and had grown a bit weary writing so often about the original Angry Birds, Seasons, Rio and what seem like infinite variations on the theme. I was curious about Angry Birds Space, Rovio?s forth instalment, and confident the game would be extraordinarily well-executed, but did not expect to be launched out of my socks. Yet here I am barefoot and eager to fill you in and get back to playing. This is the best Angry Birds by far.

rComplex iPhone Game Review (3/5)

The App Store isn't hurting for variety in its gameplay. While some gamers bemoan the inevitable slew of titles that ride the coat-tails of a successful franchise, the upshot is a refinement of the gameplay in to something resembling a genre. As such there are often minimum expectations for such games, especially when so many have tried and failed already, making large missteps hard to forgive.

rComplex by Interwave Studios has sadly fallen in to this situation and while its unbelievably intriguing presentation begs you to keep playing, the flawed control system goes a long way in destroying any goodwill you may have for the game.

The end is nigh and you're on your own as you sprint through an abandoned city-scape, lovingly detailed, but stark in its presentation. Objects are darker and shadowed the closer they are to you, pulling out in to the distance through shades of red and through to a tantalizingly blue - a beautiful, but impossible to reach harbor of safety from your current predicament.

You're afforded the ability to shoot at the tentacled doom chasing after you, though bullets are limited in supply and should you get caught you'll need a handy scythe to escape and continue running. Swiping allows you to jump or slide, avoiding color-coded obstacles in your path.

If this was all there was to proceedings then the game would be short, but insanely engaging thanks to its well-vocalized narrative. Sadly the player floats Luigi-style through the air, making the impossibly short time you're given to react to obstacles even shorter as the collision detection is utterly unforgiving. Add in to this the awkward choice of whether you swipe on the right side of the screen, potentially obscuring obstacles, or the left side, potentially wasting precious ammunition ...

Dynasty Warriors Next Review

Like death and taxes, the Dynasty Warriors series has become something of a fixed constant, appearing almost as regularly as a new toothbrush (for me at least) with its tried-and-tested mix of wandering hack-and-slash combat where you steamroller through a sea of similar-looking troops - to the point where developer Omega Force would have us believe that the Chinese perfected cloning well before Dolly the sheep. It's also journalistic custom to review a Warriors sequel with a precursory shrug and a level of "here we go again" acceptance, but in truth, Dynasty Warriors Next is a tangible departure from the Dynasty norm.

Making its Vita debut in timely fashion, Next pillages all 65 characters from Dynasty Warriors 7: Xtreme Legends while maintaining an equally robust graphics engine. Although the draw distance and volume of on-screen enemies are a fraction less extreme, in all other respects Next is an uncompromising match for its console brother. But far from being a straight-up Dynasty Warriors 7: Takeaway Edition with no distinguishing qualities besides portability, Next takes inspiration from the wider series while playing to the strengths of the new handheld.

That said, it wouldn't be Dynasty Warriors without Omega Force's unique interpretation of the Romance of the Three Kings narrative, and in this regard, the single-player Campaign Mode lives up to expectations by retelling the events of the warring Wei, Wu and Shu Dynasties with a handful of pre-rendered cut-scenes and a cast of one-dimensional characters. But while major events like the Yellow Turban Rebellion and the Battle of Red Cliffs will be instantly familiar to both Dynasty fans and well-read historians, the path to victory is as much about dominating the map as it is about hunting down enemy officers.

Reality Fighters Review

I've been showing off PlayStation Vita to my family. Dad likes a bit of Xbox, mum is conducting another affair with Professor Layton, and my 10-year-old niece is an evolutionary miracle: half-human, half-iOS.

As such, I'm always keen to gauge their reactions to any notable breakthrough in gaming, away from the stage-managed, on-message, cut-and-paste hype of The Industry.

Beaming with 'look at me' novelty, Reality Fighters seemed a good place to start. And it duly produced "ooh"s and "aah"s in all the right places as I swiftly transformed mother into a ballet-dancing kung fu master and had her striking wildly at her Santa coat-and-skirt-wearing son in my parents' kitchen sink. It puts a new spin on child abuse, if nothing else.

App of the Day: Ragdoll Blaster 3

Ragdoll Blaster 3 is one of the most consistently inventive games on iOS. Pretty surprising, eh? The previous two games in this series have been on my phone for years and survived every single app cull. Doodle Jump? A memory. Slice It? Gone. Angry Birds? Don't make me laugh.

Each Ragdoll Blaster game has tried a new visual treatment - the first game had a gorgeous low-fi style on graph paper backgrounds, while the sequel went for a moodier steam-powered toybox look. Ragdoll Blaster 3 has echoes of the former style with much more colour, but unfortunately the temptation of LittleBigPlanet has been too much. These ragdolls are now bargain-basement Sackboys. It doesn't matter in-game, because they're always so small and moving so quick you're never really looking at the dolls, but otherwise the comparison is so obvious as to be embarrassing.

Such crude associations aren't necessary, because anyone who plays Ragdoll Blaster 3 will fall in love. It's a physics-based blend of shooter and puzzler, where you control a cannon that shoots out ragdolls - the speed at which they're fired depends on how far away your finger is from the cannon when it taps. Pretty soon levels pop up with multiple cannons, which are switched between by simply firing ragdolls into them.

The Jak and Daxter Trilogy Review

In many ways, the Jak and Daxter series serves as a chronicle of the declining platformer. Naughty Dog's PlayStation 2 trilogy starts off with an innocent collect-a-thon about a boy and his furry friend saving the world, but quickly shifts to a darker tone with an industrial setting, plenty of gunplay and an over-world that shows a much stronger likeness to Grand Theft Auto than the Precursor Legacy. The grim, later Jak games relegated most of their platforming to isolated tombs, ruins and ancient temples, signifying the genre becoming something of a relic.

As far as this HD upgrade for PS3 goes, it's a solid conversion with virtually no new content aside from trophies and 3D support. For the most part, developer Mass Media Inc's reverence for Naughty Dog's originals works, but it would have been nice for them to add an option for subtitles in the first Jak and Daxter, or implement separate controls for first- and third-person aiming, as what's inverted in one perspective won't be in another. Regardless of the lack of bells and whistles, remastering these games in 720p is still a significant visual upgrade of three of the most interesting platformers of the 21st century.

Of all the games in this collection, Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy shows its age the most - not just in terms of visuals (though its blocky character models do that), but in its design. This humble origin story hails from the days when platforming protagonists were expected to collect doodads and little else. They certainly didn't talk, and Jak instead expresses himself through dance, as was customary for the time.

Draw Something by OMGPOP iPhone Game Review (5/5)

I bring this message to you in the brief moments of time I now have spare to me. It is abundantly clear to me now that downloading, installing and playing Draw Something with my friends was a huge mistake - I need to work, but I can't... I'm stuck trying to work out how best to depict the word 'Morning' in a clever new way.

OMGPOP - you have single-handedly ruined the productivity of smartphone owners around the world.

For those who haven't jumped on board the increasingly popular craze that is 'Draw Something', the premise is simple. Take a dash of Scrabble and a whole heaping of Pictionary, add social features and bake until you're up at 4am wondering why no-one is responding any more.

Players have a choice between three words, each increasing in challenge and representing a greater coin value than the last one should both people succeed in drawing and decoding said drawing. These coins can be spent on purchasing 'bombs' (used to switch to new words or clear letters) or new color palettes to make drawing easier.

Games can be initiated either by finding friends playing the game through Facebook, email, specific username's, or more interestingly, by allowing the game to pair you up with someone completely at random.

Aside from the fun of competing with friends in a friendly game of 'what did I draw?', there's a magic in being able to watch the person you're playing with draw their picture in real-time. All of your strokes are saved and sent to the player and replayed - after guessing correctly the person who drew the picture can also see the other person trying to guess the answer as they tap each letter in turn.

There's something intensely visceral about ...

Adventure Time game in works at WayForward

Cartoon Network Show getting DS game later this year from the studio behind Silent Hill: Book of Memories and Aliens: Infestation.

Adventure Time with Finn and Jake is leaping from the television screen and onto the DS, according to series creator Pendleton Ward.

Through a series of tweeted doodles, Ward revealed last night that he would be working "so closely" with WayForward Technologies to develop a DS game based on the Cartoon Network show. Details are thin on the project, but Ward said the game will ship in 2012.

Adventure Time for the DS will not be the first game based on the TV show. A series of Flash games are available through Cartoon Network's website.

WayForward is currently at work on Silent Hill: Book of Memories for the PlayStation Vita. The company's previous work includes Aliens: Infestation, A Boy and His Blob, and BloodRayne: Betrayal.

App of the Day: Waking Mars

If you simply cannot bear the thought of another match-three puzzler, or you think mobile games are good for littleelse but meaningless time-killing, then Tiger Style's Waking Mars has a quietly compelling argument to make to the contrary.

The game centres around an expedition that researches, experiments and then plays ecological God with the slowly waking life buried beneath the surface of Mars. After a mechanical rover disappears, your character Liang - aided by the surface-bound Amani - is sent down to investigate, but quickly realises he can only progress by increasing the amount of biological matter within each area. Doing so allows him to move past the strange membranes that divide each section from the next.

Your electronic companion ART keeps track of the research progress made on each species encountered during exploration - different types of soil welcome different plants, different creatures have different reproduction requirements, and so on. Understanding the gentle interactions between each life-form and nurturing the delicate ecosystem they represent collectively is essential for increasing each area's Biomass meter and opening the path ahead.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma Plus Review

Ever since handheld gaming achieved a level of processing power that could handle 3D visuals, it's become an unwritten rule that at least one launch title must be a port or remake of a popular console game - just to prove that the new portable can live up to all the cosmetic hype. Super Mario 64 DS, MediEvil: Resurrection on PSP, Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition on 3DS all followed this trend.

PlayStation Vita continues it with the likes of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, but out of all the expanded game titles and familiar boxart, Ninja Gaiden Sigma Plus stands out as perhaps the most recognisable; it's an enhanced version of a PlayStation 3 remake which itself is based on an Xbox classic from 2004. Despite being older than the PSP, does this shinobi adventure still have what it takes to impress?

The answer is a resounding yes for anyone who hasn't played Ninja Gaiden Black, Ninja Gaiden Sigma or the original - but for those who have, Sigma Plus doesn't add a whole lot that's new.

iPhone App Video Review: Rune Raiders

So the basic set up is that this elfen archer character forms up a little mercenary band/guild/party/whatever, and roams about the land doing jobs. As you progress, more people are added to your roster, and eventually you guys fight for the fate of the kingdom and all that jazz. The gameplay here is rather unique. Each level involves moving up a six tile wide board with your maximum number of six party members, fighting off monsters and collecting items. It is entirely impossible to move backwards. For each move, you can either have them hold their position, move ahead as a group, or move any single member. There is a certain progression line that you can?t move past, but otherwise, you?re free to rearrange your formation as much as you need to. Unfortunately, if enemies are near, they will attack every time you do so, since it technically counts as your move. Really, the end goal is to do everything in as few, carefully calculated moves as possible.

From the smug charm of the pigs in Angry Birds, to the teddy bears of Snuggle Truck, there are a number of app games that rely on ?cuteness? to help sell their concept. It?s not a bad idea, but I think we?ve met the peak of this trend with Coco Loco. App of the Day: Angry Birds Space

If familiarity breeds contempt, then Rovio's avian-flinging physics puzzler must be one of the most reviled games around. Downloaded millions of times, the series has entranced normal people the world over, yet been greeted mostly with disdain by gamers.

For the game's critics, its sins are many: gameplay that seems to favour blind luck, a scoring system that is almost impossible to decipher and a heavy reliance on DLC, turning out 10 updates for Angry Birds Seasons in just under 18 months, have all tapped into core player fears regarding the shallow, craven nature of mobile gaming. More than anything, it's the suspicion that having hit on a winning formula, Rovio is content to churn out more of the same, doing little to grow the game beneath.

So it comes as something of a surprise that Angry Birds Space is downright ambitious. It's certainly the first game bearing those green porcine faces and bulbous birds to feel like an actual sequel, an evolution rather than a quick palette swap.

App of the Day: Dungeon Village

Kairosoft doesn't so much make games as habits. Back in late 2010, Game Dev Story became something of an obsession among games critics, and not just because it focused on the industry we all know and love. If nothing this prolific publisher has released since has had quite the same impact, it's partly because people have sworn not to get hooked again. Some of us actually want to get some work done every now and again.

The localisation team has deviously tried to disguise it with a different name, but Dungeon Village is actually the latest in the increasingly long line of Story games. That it was titled RPG Story in Japan should give you a fair idea of what to expect. Your job is to build a town capable of attracting, clothing, feeding, arming and eventually housing adventurers. It's a little like Final Fantasy spin-off My Life As A King, with a bit of SimCity thrown in for good measure. But naturally it most resembles its publisher's previous works.

Like those games, it's built around a set of satisfying little feedback loops. Adventurers take on quests, killing monsters and finding treasure, and you get to invest the spoils into developing your village to attract new dungeoneers. Build a caf next to an inn and you can increase the inn's rates. Lob a bakery next to the armoury and adventurers will find the smell of fresh bread that much more appealing. You can spend the money you earn on developing the village or giving adventurers presents to keep them happy and improve their monster-slaying prowess. Either way, it's win-win.

Resident Evil: Raccoon City dev reveals next project

Following poorly received Resident Evil game, company building its first original IP, the mysterious 2013-dated Strata Scavenger.

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City shipped yesterday and was panned by critics across the board. Today, its developer, Slant Six Games, has announced the studio's next project, Strata Scavenger.

Revealed via a sparse product page on the studio's website, Slant Six said it expects to ship Strata Scavenger in 2013. Details are thin concerning the project, but a poster for the game (at right) depicts a space ship hovering above thick smoke and bright lightning. Platforms were not announced.

Strata Scavenger will be Slant Six's first original intellectual property. Prior to developing Resident Evil: Raccoon City, the developer built the SOCOM games SOCOM: Tactical Strike (2007 PSP), SOCOM: Confrontation (2008 PS3), and SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo 3 (2010 PSP).

rComplex Review

Considering that a nearly constant stream of auto-runners have been appearing on the App Store for several years now, new ones have to offer something special to make themselves noteworthy. The main thing rComplex offers is a story. As the main character sprints ever forward, a dramatic voiceover lets us in on his thoughts as he tries to puzzle out why he?s being chased by a monster. Although it comes off as cheesy rather than serious, it might?ve been enough to make us keep playing, if only the game mechanics weren?t broken.

Like in most auto-runners, the name of the game here is momentum. To keep up a healthy sprinting pace, you swipe up to jump over obstacles and swipe down to slide under them. Miss one and you?ll stumble, letting the monster gain on you. You?re also sporting a gun with a scythe attachment, so when the creature gets too close you can shoot it to make it back off. If it catches you, you can speed-tap on the screen to slice off the tentacle holding you, but doing so breaks your scythe.

Hey, that tickles!

All of this is pretty standard stuff for the genre, and we?ve seen similar mechanics in Temple Run, Canabalt, Grim Joggers, and countless other titles. The main difference is the storyline, which involves amnesia and isn?t all that interesting. But the problem-- the enormous, game-breaking problem-- is that your character doesn?t react fast enough to your input. When you swipe up to jump, it takes him so much time to react that he?s usually already stumbled over the object you?re trying to jump over before his feet leave the ground. Other times your swipes do nothing, and you?re left to watch, shaking your head, as he gets clotheslined by a piece of furniture he should easily have avoided.

Making matters worse, when you die you have to wait nearly 30 seconds before you can try the level again. This game is a slow, unresponsive slog. If you really want to play rComplex, you?re probably better off playing the free PC version, which you can download here.

Auto-runners thrive on split-second decision making and snappy controls. rComplex is too broken to even play after the first few levels, when obstacles start to come at you so fast you don?t have a prayer of avoiding them. If the developer updates the game to address the control issue, it might be worth another look. But for now it?s just a shoddy, frustrating experience in an overdone genre. Unless you?re a masochist, there?s no reason to waste your time on a game like this.

Planetside 2 Preview: The Classic Online Shooter Returns

The joy of the massively multiplayer sci-fi shooter Planetside was the war stories. In another life my name was Commander Batsphinx, and I fought for the New Conglomerate. Sometimes when I find myself drinking with old comrades we reminisce - telling tales of war that the younger generation don't seem to understand. The time we defended that vital bridge with hundreds of our brave boys against those bastard Vanu. The time we defended a fort when outnumbered by Reavers and won the day. That time we camped that spawn tube again and again and again.

The perpetual war of Planetside 2 is being built to recreate this heady experience, and on the basis of what Sony Online Entertainment showed yesterday at GDC in San Francisco, it looks set to kindle war stories that will bore grandchildren the world over.

"We've identified a lot of things as 'Planetside moments' that we're trying to encourage." explains Creative Director Matt Higby. "It's always the large-scale co-operative things: a dozen Galaxies flying full of troops and all dropping off in a co-ordinated way, or five Reavers flying over a hill in formation. A lot of games replicate that through a cut-scene. I mean, Modern Warfare 3 from a cinematic standpoint was incredible, you'd see airplanes flying overhead, submarines surfacing and buildings collapsing. You felt part of this enormous fight. Thing is, in Planetside 2 all that stuff is actually player-controlled."

Darksiders II confirmed for Wii U launch

Vigil Games lead designer says action title will be available on day one for Nintendo's new console with system-specific features.

Gamers who pick up a Wii U this holiday season will be able to take home a copy of Darksiders II on the same today, developer Vigil Games has confirmed.

Speaking to Digital Spy, Darksiders II lead designer Hayden Dalton said the Wii U version is being developed alongside the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC iterations. Additionally, a "small team" is working to ensure that the Wii U version uses the system's tablet controller in a "unique way," according to the developer.

The Wii U version of Darksiders II will boast features exclusive to the system, though Dalton was not able to provide specific examples.

"It's basically the core game, but then with added abilities to do certain things that you can't do on the other consoles," he said. "We're not basically heavily changing the core game to support the control system, but the control system will be an enhancement of the core game."

Darksiders II was previously anticipated to launch alongside the Wii U. The Wii U is due out worldwide this holiday season, but Nintendo has not announced a specific release date. The company will share more information regarding the system at the 2012 Electronic Entertainment Expo, where final Wii U hardware will be on hand.

The Xbox 360, PS3, and PC iterations of Darksiders II are due out on June 26. The game follows the horseman Death instead of the original game's protagonist, War, and it tells a parallel story to the original rather than continuing on from that title's conclusion. In the game, Death will attempt to clear War's "good" name (he's accused of starting the end of times ahead of time) and save humankind in the process.

Level-5 joins Entertainment Software Association

Professor Layton developer joins US trade group alongside publishers Rubicon Organization and Little Orbit.

Level-5 is increasing its Western presence. The Entertainment Software Association today announced that the company has become a member of the United States trade organization.

Level-5, most famous for developing the Professor Layton series, was founded in 1998 in Japan. The company opened an office in the United States in 2010, in Santa Monica, California.

On top of Level-5, the ESA added startup digital publisher Rubicon Organization and Young Justice publisher Little Orbit to its ranks today. With the addition of the three new publishers, the ESA's total membership stands at 36.

Other companies that are part of the ESA include console makers like Nintendo of America, Sony Computer Entertainment America, and Microsoft Corporation, as well as smaller firms like 38 Studios, Natsume, and 505 Games.

The ESA recently made headlines when California was forced to pay the group $950,000 over its failed Supreme Court battle. The ESA also made a splash in January when over the course of three weeks it proclaimed support for the controversial Stop Online Piracy Act before backing away from it.
